On The Green – Taking the Natural Course

On The Green CBD is pioneering the use of natural hemp extracts to improve performance on the golf course

GOLF IS A sport of fine margins. Every small improvement in performance will help a player knock one or two strokes off their round. The products made by On The Green CBD can offer that improvement.  The company was the brainchild of Nick Fishenden, a golf lover from England who moved to the US in 2008 to attend the Golf Academy of America, where he obtained his degree in Golf Management. Nick turned pro before a back injury ended his dream of a professional career, and he started working in the fledgling cannabidiol (CBD) industry. This takes cannabidiol, a compound extracted from hemp, and uses it to treat a wide range of conditions, from chronic pain to anxiety. In 2019, Nick put his two interests together and created On The Green CBD, a company that makes CBD products tailored specifically to meet the needs of golfers.

“With my background in golf and CBD, I was able to figure out what would be useful for the golfer,” says Nick. “Among our unique product range, we have three lines of tinctures – Focus, Recovery and Sleep. I use our products myself on a daily basis. The sleep tincture helps me get restful sleep every night and the roll-on cooling gel with menthol is within arm’s reach at all times as I constantly use that for my back pain. It has an immediate effect.”

Other popular products include sunblock, vegan gummies, soft gel capsules, hand sanitizer and an arnica and turmeric relief cream. All have been created to either aid players when they are on the course by helping their mind relax, or to assist their post-round recovery by improving sleep or reducing inflammation, allowing them to return to the course. Nick has teamed up with his father, Neil, an experienced entrepreneur, and the pair have already made inroads into the US and UK markets through specialist golf shops and online direct-to-consumer sales.

On The Green CBD has been established as a prestige brand, with products endorsed by professionals such as Phil Golding, who plays on the senior tour and Scott Drummond, former winner of the Volvo PGA Championship at Wentworth. “We are a premium product with real authenticity,” says Nick. “We are being stocked ahead of larger CBD brands in specialist golf shops because we have a reputation of being exclusive and unique to golf.”

The Fishendens stress that On The Green CBD products do not contain THC, the cannabinoid that induces the psychoactive high associated with cannabis. Instead they mix high-quality CBD with other terpenes – the naturally occurring chemicals in plants used to manufacture essential oils. As a result, CBD was removed from the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) banned substances list in early 2018, allowing its use by PGA tour players and Olympic athletes. Bubba Watson, Charley Hoffman, Lucas Glover and Scott Piercy are among the high-profile PGA Tour names actively promoting the use of CBD, along with senior players such as Scott McCarron and Fred Couples. Between them they have cited CBD’s anti-inflammatory properties, its role in pain and anxiety relief, and in improved sleep.

While On The Green CBD’s range is currently targeted at golfers, the founders have had discussions with representatives of other sports, including cricket, cycling and racket sports. But, for now, golf remains the singular focus. “We know our CBD source is very good but we also triple lab-test every single one of our products independently of our suppliers to make sure it is compliant for a professional,” says Nick. “That means it is suitable for anybody.”
