Think you Know Carnoustie? One of the World’s Best Golfing Destinations

You would be right in acknowledging that The Championship Course at Carnoustie Golf Links is one of the world’s very best golfing destinations and a bucket list venue for golfers across the globe. However, if you think that’s where the story ends, you’re in for a surprise!

The best kept secrets in golf are Carnoustie’s two (yes two!) other 18-hole golf courses – The Carnoustie Burnside Course and The Carnoustie Buddon Course. Though overshadowed by the exceptional Carnoustie Championship Course, both The Burnside and The Buddon Courses boast their own remarkable allure, forming a triad of golfing greatness nestled along Scotland’s breath-taking East Coast.

The Burnside Course, steeped in history, dates back to 1892. It served as a qualifying course for The Open Championship in 1953, notably witnessing Ben Hogan’s qualification for the Championship, a prelude to lifting The Claret Jug on The Carnoustie Championship Course later that very week – the only time ever that Hogan competed in the Championship.

This feisty but fun course challenges golfers with its narrow fairways, heather-laden terrain, daunting pot bunkers, and the meandering Barry Burn, a feature integral to several challenging par three holes. Greens are small, contoured and hard to hold, especially in dry summer conditions or when the wind gets up.

The Carnoustie Buddon Course is the newest of the three at Carnoustie and provides a very different golfing experience. Interestingly considered the most, and least, Links course of the trio, it commences along the North Sea’s edge, affording breath-taking vistas of the bay. As the round unfolds, it seamlessly transitions into heathland terrain before gradually embracing a parkland setting. Here, picturesque lakes teeming with wildlife grace the landscape, a testament to Carnoustie’s ecological stewardship and sustainability endeavours. Reverting to a Links-like character on the back nine, the course culminates in two exceptional tests of Links golf and offers a perfect end to the round.

An extraordinary facet of Carnoustie lies in the unified maintenance of all three courses by the same greenkeeping team, employing state-of-the-art equipment. It is immediately evident that they are profoundly proud of the immaculate presentation of each course, a testament to their unwavering dedication to upholding Carnoustie’s reputation as some of the world’s best conditioned courses.

A visit to Carnoustie is a guarantee of Scottish links golf at its absolute best.
