Mr Tahir Hussain is a Consultant Vascular, Endovascular and General Surgeon at Northwest London University NHS Trust and at the Royal Brompton Hospital.  He is also Honorary Senior Lecturer at Imperial College Medical School. His research was awarded the Hunterian Professor of the Royal College of Surgeons of England.  He has 25 years’ experience as a consultant.

Vascular surgery is a specialty that deals with the blood vessels of the entire body.

The arteries take oxygen from the heart to the various organs and the veins bring blood from the organs back to the heart. The arteries can block leading to damage of the organs and a great deal of time of a vascular surgeon is spent dealing with narrowed or blocked blood vessels. The most common area for the blocked vessels to occur is in the lower limb.  Currently there is an epidemic of diabetes and problems with the feet in such patients.  These patients can lose their limbs and revascularising the leg is an important component of what Tahir does currently.

Varicose veins are incredibly common with 1 in 3 of the population suffering from this condition at some time in their life. The aetiology of this is often due to the valves in the veins failing to work and when a person is standing up because of gravity the blood pools in the veins. This is seen and large bulging veins usually on the inner aspect of the leg.

With golf being played standing up a lot of golfers has visible veins which can be unsightly because itchiness can cause pain and heaviness. These golfers can be easily treated within a day and get back to playing golf within a few days. They will find that the leg is more comfortable and less heavy and achy particularly after 18 holes of golf.

Local anaesthetic minimally invasive varicose veins procedures are excellent and provide early return to daily activities such as golf.

They involve keyhole surgery and insertion of laser or thermal fibres that obliterated the main vein. There are 2 systems veins in the lower leg the superficial venous system is redundant venous system in the majority of the population. The simple procedures have been developed over the last 25 years and the long-term results have shown an excellent result in terms of durability and a low incidence of recurrence.

Varicose veins severely affect the patient’s quality of life however the National health service is increasingly unable to cope with this condition because of the number of patients suffering with veins.  Most treatment for veins can be performed as a day case under local anaesthesia allowing patients to get back to normal activity within days. 

Mr Tahir Hussain has been involved in teaching and research and has been a principal investigator in clinical trials for a number of important venous studies. 

He has been Clinical Lead and Royal College of Surgeons Tutor. Currently he is the examiner for the Royal College of surgeons of Edinburgh and is still involved in education and undergraduate postgraduate level.
