Golf injuries don’t always need a hospital visit – but they do need the right clinical care

Golf-related shoulder and elbow injuries are most often caused by repetitive loading rather than acute trauma. As a result, many cases respond well to structured, evidence-based treatment

delivered in an outpatient clinical setting. Mr Alun Yewlett, Consultant Orthopaedic Shoulder and Elbow Surgeon at LIPS Healthcare explains how assessment, diagnosis and often

regenerative treatments can be delivered at their flagship clinic in the world-renowned iconic Battersea Power Station.

Shoulder injuries account for about 8-19% of all golf-related injuries. Shoulder problems often stem from overuse and repetitive swing mechanics, including rotator cuff tendonitis,

impingement and instability, especially in the lead shoulder.

Elbow injury prevalence in amateurs, including tendinopathies like medial or lateral epicondylitis have been reported as high as 20-24% of lifetime injury cases.

Interestingly, research shows “tennis elbow” lateral epicondylitis) occurs more commonly in golfers than traditional “golfer’s elbow” (medial epicondylitis).

If you find that you have developed pain in the shoulder or elbow after a round and it hasn’t settled with simple rest, ice and elevation after a week or two, then don’t put off seeking help. Early accurate diagnosis is key to the best outcomes.

At LIPS Healthcare we have access to some of the worlds’ best doctors and diagnostic equipment all conveniently located in the heart of the iconic Battersea Power Station.

Mr Yewlett works closely with Remedy Health and Performance and can access leading physiotherapists and facilitate home visits or travelling support if needed for golfers on the road. We can also arrange discreet entry to and from the clinic if required.

Damage in the tendons and joints that previously required surgical intervention can often be regenerated or the underlying disease process modulated using evidence based advanced regenerative techniques.

Treatment Plans: As a highly experienced surgeon with an interest in regenerative treatments as well as surgical solutions, Mr Yewlett is uniquely placed to help guide patients to decide what treatment is the most appropriate for them.

All treatment plans are personalised to the individual and surgical solutions are only considered when there are no better non-surgical solutions. He is happy to provide second opinions when needed for complex cases.

Shoulder Pain: If there are no viable regenerative options for arthritic shoulder pain, we specialise in patient specific joint replacements using the most up to date technology to plan the optimum implant for a given individuals own unique anatomy and where necessary getting custom made prostheses rather than a simple off the shelf solution. Patients routinely return to golf after these operations, having a shoulder joint replacement does not mean you can’t return to playing golf.

If surgery is needed Mr Yewlett operates at the prestigious Weymouth Street Hospital and the King Edward VII hospital near Harley Street in Marylebone. Our very own LIPS Battersea Hospital will be opening by the end of 2026 so allowing more choice in London later this year.

Mr Yewlett is happy to discuss all of his personal outcomes for different treatment options, openly and transparently for patients to make an informed decision on how they wish to proceed as many of these treatment options are not widely accessible on the NHS. We have an on-site X-ray and ultrasound suite, as well as a highly equipped physiotherapy centre, to make the patient journey smoother, easier, and more convenient.
